 About IGNOU 

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), the world’s largest Open University, was established by an Act of Parliament in 1985 with the following objectives to meet institutional vision: 

• To accelerate and disseminate learning and knowledge by diverse means, including the use of communication technology; 

• To provide opportunities for higher education to large segment of the population;

• To promote the educational well-being of the community at large; and 

• To encourage the Open University and distance education systems in the educational pattern of the country. 

All these years the University has been working untiringly to achieve the above objectives to offer high quality, innovative and need-based academic programmes at different levels to all those who need them, across the country and overseas, and to reach out to the disadvantaged social segments by providing access to higher education at an affordable cost.

• In March 2022, IGNOU was ranked 247 in the Webometric ranking of Indian website, based on the criterion of its presence on the Internet in terms of impact, openness and excellence. 

• National Coordinator of four DTH (Direct to Home) Educational Channels under SWAYAM PRABHA project of the Ministry of Education (MOE). The University is actively involved in the production of tele-lectures for these DTH channels. 

• National Coordinator for the SWAYAM Portal of the MOE Project for delivery of Moocs for Diploma and Certificate level courses. 

• The University currently has cumulative student strength of over 3.4 million learners. 

• The fresh registration & re-registration of learners in 2021-22 (July 2021 and January 2022 admission cycles) was 12,89,519 out of which 47.5 % were female; 48.6 % were from rural areas;15.0% belonged to SC and 7.8 % belonged to ST. 

• IGNOU offers its academic programmes through 21 Schools of Studies and a network of 67 Regional Centres and around 2140 Learner Support Centres (LSCs). 

• Partner in execution of Skill Acquisition and Knowledge Awareness for Livelihood Promotion (SANKALP) project of the Ministry of Skill Devlopment, GOI.

NEP Implementation 

In compliance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 the following initiatives have been taken by the University. These are: 

1. Establishment of NEP Cell: To make the NEP initiatives operational, NEP cell has been established.

2. Institutional Development Plan: The University has developed the Institutional Development Plan which has been duly approved by all statutory bodies. A monitoring committee has been constituted to monitor the implementation of IDP. 

3. Multidisciplinary and Holistic Education: The University has developed a draft document for the implementation of 4 - year UG and 1- year PG programmes in compliance with the latest UGC Guidelines.
