About IGNOU Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), the world’s largest Open University, was established by an Act of Parliament in 1985 with the following objectives to meet institutional vision: • To accelerate and disseminate learning and knowledge by diverse means, including the use of communication technology; • To provide opportunities for higher education to large segment of the population; • To promote the educational well-being of the community at large; and • To encourage the Open University and distance education systems in the educational pattern of the country.
